It’s not a good morning, America
We’re at a crossroads. And, to be honest, probably have been since the dawn of this nation. It seems that we the people are unable to form a more perfect union, establish justice or insure domestic tranquility.
What a terrifying thought that is. Today I woke up feeling particularly somber. Something about the past 24 hours has ripped much optimism from my soul. On a day during which Georgia made history in the Senate, we watched the juxtaposition of a lifetime unfold before our eyes.
And yet, I have a sinking fear that little will be done about it. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, incited an angry mob of terrorists to storm the Capitol building. This petulant coward, who has never been told no in his life, is kicking and screaming for not getting his way, and apparently is doing what he can to burn the house down on his way out.
He must be held accountable and it needs to happen today. The cabinet must convene and the Vice President needs to invoke the 25th Amendment.
Those who have perpetuated his lies need to be held accountable. Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz need to resign or be removed for stoking the flames and spreading misinformation. It’s hard to look at Mike Pence, Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, and others of the like and say “Good job!” for simply for doing what was right for the first time in 4 years. But we can commend them for attempting to carry on this democracy while organizing against them when they are up for reelection.
The entire world watched as Washington DC devolved into a state of chaos we’ve been used to seeing in third world countries or perpetuating stories of unrest in the Middle East. It was disgusting. It was a terrorist action against this country.
When people rose up against racism in the summer, following further needless murders of Black Americans, the show of force against the Black Lives Matter movement was absolutely appalling.
What’s even more appalling is the ease at which the Trump Terrorists were able to storm the Capitol, and the lack of a show of force. Where was the National Guard who had previously stood on the steps of the Capitol when facing peaceful BLM protests? Why was the Capitol Police so unprepared, and seemingly hung out to dry?
During Black Lives Matter protests, The President said “When the looting starts, the shooting starts.” Yet when White Supremacists descended upon Charlottesville this sorry excuse for a man said there were “good people on both sides”. Speaking yesterday, after the damage from his incited violence had already passed a breaking point, he started with perpetuating election lies, then said the terrorists were “special” and that he loves them.
Donald J. Trump is a disgrace. Donald J. Trump is a racist. Donald J. Trump is inciting terrorist violence to make us look one way while he escapes out the back door like a mob boss. Donald J. Trump committed treason. He must be removed, tried, and convicted of treasonous crimes against this country.
What are we supposed to say to our children? How are we supposed to wake up today and feel good about the country in which we live?
I didn’t really sleep last night. I was so angry yesterday that I cried more than once. I can’t help but think of Jeff Daniels’ rant in the opening scene of The Newsroom. “America is not the greatest country in the world anymore.” World War II ended 75 years ago, yet, as a country, we prance around as if we just stormed the beaches of Normandy yesterday.
I’m heartened that true leaders stepped up and did their best to take the reins in a horrible situation. I’m heartened that Georgia is sending Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff to the Senate. I’m heartened that an empathetic leader will be sworn in on January 20th.
America is not the greatest country in the world. We have work to do.
